Jackasses - the song is about short people. It means what it says: short people are horrible and should be killed. Here's the twist, which almost no one gets: Randy Newman doesn't hate short people; the "narrator" hates short people. That's why it's funny. This is obvious from the song's lyrics, and Randy's said it himself in interviews. It's not about "figuratively" short people, or intolerance. It's about how short people suck, but it's tongue in cheek, like "rednecks" or "sail away."

You're wrong bud, he does mean short people in the literal sense. He picked short people to demonstrate how ridiculous it is to hate another group because of their differences (race, creed, ethnicity). The verse "Short people are just the same as you and I" tells us that he's not prejudiced against short people, (who is?, lol) and reveals the meaning of the song.

that's a new interpretation to me. interesting one though.
My interpretation is that that the song is satrical, sung from the perspective of an intolerant bigot. I suppose he chose short people as the target of the bigot because:
a) it illustrates how petty and arbitrary predjudice can be,
and
b) it might not have gone down so well with those with faulty satire detectors if the song went: 'niggers have no reason to live' etc.

people know that, but it is mean to USE another group of people(that you don't belong to,Newman is not short) to make some kind of Social statement. Belive it or not short people get over looked( no pun intended) I can say that cause Iam 5'3" and male. We have enuf on our plate with out this song- we get it - we don't like it.

What the hell, this is hilarious. I'm only 5 feet tall,big1370. If you're going to be so tight why don't you just shove a piece of coal up your A and make me a diamond. Short people are the only 'safe' group to tease anyway. Anything else is racist but everyone can be short :D

How utterly shocking that you have completely missed the point of this song big1370. Get over yourself and rub a couple of those synapses together and realize the world does not, in fact, revolve around you, no matter what momma said. It is a song using a ridiculous premise to point out how awful and stupid it is to judge someone on a physical attribute, be it height, skin tone, the number of teeth they have, or whether or not they can post intelligent comments on youtube. It is abit harsh like, and most short people are just normal friendly people. I think its just the minority or wotever of short men who try to act big and mouth off to people, and are just assholes in general because they are insecure. They think shouting at and picking on others and bullying makes them look big but really it just highlights how short they are.
That is the reason randy newman made this song imo.
